The Incas came into power in the 13th or 14th Century Peru, believing they were descendents of the sun and with ritual centered on the solar patterns. While there were a number of temples to the Sun, the site most familiar to us is Machu Picchu, a community approximately 50 miles northwest of Cuzco. Though we don’t know for certain, it seems this may have been a religious retreat location at an elevation of 8000 ft above sea level, allowing the believers to be closer to their God, the Sun.
