Silent Funeral
16″W X 25″H
Bamboo fabric – hand dyed, printed, appliqued and stitched.
This piece was inspired by the death of Ellis Marsalis Jr. on April 1, 2020, as a result of complications of COVID 19. This man was a patriarch of New Orleans jazz and he was buried without the first and second line ritual that would have accompanied his burial. This embodies what is happening for the world, as people die alone and loved ones are deprived of the ritual farewells that have always been part of the human experience.
“Any man’s death diminishes me because I am involved with mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tells for me.”
—John Donne
